Explained: What is the new strain of the COVID-19 detected in the UK?

BY ARFA JAVAID

Jan 8, 2021 21:08 ISTB.1.1.7 virus strain in UKB.1.1.7 virus strain in UK

“When the virus changes its method of attack, we must change our method of defence,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a Press Conference on 20 December 2020.

British PM Boris Johnson has placed London and the surrounding areas under the most stringent lockdown since March 2020 to contain the new strain of the SARS-CoV-2, effectively cancelling Christmas get-together. This announcement came days after he cited the aforementioned restrictions as ‘inhuman’.

More than 40 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East have closed their borders to travellers from the United Kingdom. As per the reports, the new strain in the virus has accounted for at least 60% of the new COVID-19 cases in London, UK.

About new strain of the Coronavirus

The new strain of the Sars-CoV-2 virus is known as VUI – 202012/01 (the first Variant Under Investigation in December 2020) or the lineage B.1.1.7.

This variant alarmed the scientists when it began to turn up more frequently in Coronavirus samples collected from parts of South England in December 2020. The variant has undergone 23 mutations.

Jagranjosh

In preliminary studies, scientists and researchers have found that people who are infected with the new strain of the coronavirus carry a heightened viral load. In simple words, a higher concentration of the virus is found in the upper respiratory tract, which in other viral diseases is associated with more severe symptoms.

As per scientists, a similar variant has been detected in South Africa in 90% of the samples whose genetic sequences have been analysed since November 2020.

As of 13 December 2020, 1,108 cases with this variant have been identified, predominantly in the South and East of England.

Is the new strain of the virus deadly?

As per several scientists and researchers, the new strain of the virus is not more deadly but is 70% more transmissible compared to the previous mutations.

The new strain, B.1.1.7, is said to be spreading fast. The first case was detected in September 2020 and around a quarter of cases in London were mutant ones within 2 months. By mid-December, the said cases rose to nearly two-thirds.

As quoted by 3AW, Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection at the University of Birmingham, Professor Willem van Schaik stated that the new strain of the coronavirus is not more deadly but is contagious. This means that it is easier for this strain of the coronavirus to spread from one person to another.

From where the new strain of the coronavirus came?

The new strain of the virus has undergone several mutations and it might have emerged in a patient with a weakened immune system who was unable to beat the virus and his body became breeding ground for the virus to mutate.

Will vaccines work against the new strain of Coronavirus?

As per the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research Director General Shekhar Mande, the vaccines will work against the new strain of Coronavirus.

As quoted by India Today, Dr Jeremy Farrar, Director of Wellcome Trust stated that at present, there’s no indication that the new strain of the Coronavirus would evade treatments and vaccines. However, the mutation reminds us of the power of the virus to adapt which cannot be ruled out in the future.

According to scientists, the Moderna, Pfizer and other vaccines that are currently in development will work on this variant.

Apart from the United Kingdom, the new strain has been found in other countries such as Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon and Singapore.

Is the new strain found in India?

Yes, as stated by the Union Health Ministry, the new strain of the virus is detected in India.

In a piece of bad news, five travellers from the UK to India have tested COVID-19 positive on 22 December 2020. Their samples were sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to be checked for the new coronavirus strain.

On 29 December 2020, Union Health Ministry, Government of India has stated that a total of six samples of six UK returnee persons have been found to be positive with the new UK variant genome. 3 in NIMHANS, Bengaluru, 2 in CCMB, Hyderabad and 1 in NIV, Pune.

As per a statement released by the Union Health Ministry, all these persons have been kept in single room isolation in designated Health Care facilities by respective State Governments. Their close contacts have also been put under quarantine. Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on. The situation is under careful watch and regular advice is being provided to the States for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing & dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs.

On 30 December 2020, Union Health Ministry stated that a total of 20 persons have been infected with the new strain of COVD-19, including six persons reported on 29 December 2020.

It is to be noted that the Government of India has constituted the INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium) comprising 10 labs (NIBMG Kolkata, ILS Bhubaneswar, NIV Pune, CCS Pune, CCMB Hyderabad, CDFD Hyderabad, InSTEM Bengaluru, NIMHANS Bengaluru, IGIB Delhi, NCDC Delhi) for genome sequencing.

Speaking at a press briefing of the Health Ministry, Niti Ayog Member, Dr. V.K. Paul has stated that there’s no cause for concern and has asked people not to panic but remain vigilant.

He further added, “The new strain of Covid-19 in the United Kingdom has increased transmissibility. This mutation is not affecting the severity of the disease. Case fatality is not affected by this mutation.”

On 8 January 2021, Union Health Ministry, Government of India has stated that a total of 82 people have been infected in India with the new strain of the virus.

Sars-CoV-2 virus mutation

Scientists and researchers have stressed that all viruses mutate and for this reason, the vaccines need to be frequently updated. The COVID-19 virus which was first identified in China’s Wuhan has undergone many mutations, most of which went unnoticed.

Two distinct mutations have been noted by the scientists– H69/V70 deletion and the D614G.

The similarities between both the mutations are that they affect the spike proteins, binding the virus to the human cells and infecting them.

Coronavirus mutated into ten different types: Scientists

What do you mean by mutation? When any virus replicates itself and moves from one host to another, the genetic sequence of the virus changes which is known as mutation.

To sum up, all the viruses mutate and so is the case with Sars-CoV-2 virus which is responsible for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. At present, scientists and researchers have not found the said variant of the virus more deadly but have found it 70% more transmissible than its previous versions. Also, the vaccines which are underway will work against the latest strain of the virus.

Science and Tech Weekly Brief: Important Updates from January 2-8, 2021

BY TULIKA TANDON

Jan 8, 2021 18:32 ISTScience and Tech Brief 2021Science and Tech Brief 2021

Check out what the area of Science and Technology has been upto this week. From COVID 19 Vaccine Dry Run to Flue Gas Desulphurisation- take a look at the detailed list of major events that have occurred in the past one week that is from January 2- 8, 2021.

What is Flue Gas Desulphurisation?

Key Points:

  1. Power Ministry of India wants to dismiss or push back the deadlines for adoption of new emission norms by coal-fired power plants to avoid increased power tariffs.
  2. It is the removal of Sulphur Dioxide. The plant of flue gas desulphurisation removes sulphur dioxides from the flue gas produced by boilers, furnaces, and other sources.
  3. 300 Flue Gas Desulphurisation plants have been supplied worldwide and have acquired larger market shares.
  4. They have the following features:
  • -High SO2 removal efficiencies meet the required emission standards for various types of fossil fuels
  • -Many pollution controlling agents are associated with environmental control equipment
  • -They have a high reliability
  • -These have energy and utility savings associated with them.

The process used for FGD

  1. Wet Scrubbing: Usage of a slurry of alkaline sorbents like limestone or lime or seawater to scrub gases.
  2. Spray-dry scrubbing
  3. Wet Sulphuric acid process: It is used to recover sulphur in the form of commercial quality sulphuric acid.
  4. Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulates are removed by the SNOX Flue gas desulphurisation from flue gases.
  5. Powdered hydrated lime is introduced by the Dry sorbent injection in exhaust ducts to remove SO2 and SO3 from emission.

What is Dry Run of Vaccine?

A dry run is basically a drill or a mock test of the vaccines before introducing the original vaccine product in public. The government aims to assess the operational feasibility and linkages between planning and implementation of the process. They also wish to identify the challenges that may fall and be prepared with the solutions before the actual implementation.

A dry run ahead of the actual rollout of the COVID vaccines has begun in India from January 2, 2021.  On January 8, 2021, the second run of the COVID 19 vaccine was conducted in India.

Who administered the vaccine in India?

  1. Medical officers
  2. ASHA workers
  3. Cold Chain handlers
  4. Data Managers
  5. Vaccinators
  6. IEC officers etc.

What is Covishield Vaccine?

Covishield vaccine against Coronavirus has been developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. It is being manufactured by the Pune-based Serum Institute of India(SII) through a license from AstraZeneca and Oxford.

It is the Indian variant of AZD1222. It is a Recombinant Chimpanzee Adenovirus vector vaccine (Covishield), encoding the SARS-CoV-2 Spike (S) glycoprotein with technology transfer from AstraZeneca/Oxford University.

All about Covaxin Vaccine:

Covaxin vaccine has been developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the National Institute of Virology and uses a different platform.

  1. Covaxin is an “inactivated” vaccine incorporating the SARS-CoV-2 virus and has no potential to infect or replicate once it is injected while just uplifting an immunised response.
  2. It is expected to target more than just the spike protein.
  3. It also aims to develop an immune response towards the nucleocapsid protein which is the cell of the virus that encloses its genetic material.

All about Plant Nutrition:

It is a process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other important nutrients that are required for life. Nutrition is a process by which animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances.

What is Autrotrophic Nutrition?

In this type of nutrition, organisms make their own food with the help of simple organic materials like carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight. Green plants have an autotrophic mode of nutrition and such organisms are known as autotrophs.

What is the Heterotrophic mode of nutrition?

From the simple organic material like carbon dioxide and water, animals are not able to make their own food and so are dependent on other organisms for food. This is known as the heterotrophic mode of nutrition. Therefore, organisms that depend on other organisms for food are known as heterotrophs.

All about Floating Solar Power Plant in Madhya Pradesh:

A floating solar plant is an installation of solar power production that is mounted on a structure floating on a body of water. It may typically be on an artificial basin or a lake. There are two major solar power plants.

  1. FPV or Floating photovoltaic plant which uses photovoltaic panels mounted on the platform
  2. The concentrated solar power plant which uses mirrors to redirect the solar power to a tower.

Key Features:

  1. It would be a 600 MW plant based on utilising solar energy. The location is on Omkareshwar dam in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. The panels would adjust their position automatically when the water level lowers.
  2. The project requires an investment of 410 million dollars which is equivalent to INR 3000 crores. International Finance Corporation, World Bank and Power Grid would be providing aid for the project.
